The story behind the edition

From its birth in 1879, the Tarnovo Constitution stood as a quiet act of defiance: the Bulgarian people chose the most democratic path of its time despite pressure from external forces that would have preferred a more authoritarian model. That significance is what drew us into more than a year of work on a facsimile edition that can sit beside the original in a museum case.

We rebuilt the frame 1:1 from a high-resolution scan. A detailed 3D model of the coat of arms was cast by one of Bulgaria's finest foundrymen, then copper-plated and gilded. The brass letters were cut to the exact original size, polished and gilded. Covers are bound in genuine leather and every copy is assembled entirely by hand.

We are now releasing the first half of the run, 120 of the total 250 numbered copies. Each cover carries 0.35 g of pure gold, every copy bears an individual number and a certificate of authenticity. Delivery is included in the price.

Craftsmanship

  • Cover bound in genuine 0.8 mm leather.
  • A hand-drawn frame for hot-foil stamping on the covers, rendered 1:1 with the original.
  • Brass coat of arms and lettering, copper-plated and gilded, with 0.30–0.35 g of pure gold in every copy.
  • A faithful facsimile reproduction, true to the original in colour, material and scale.
  • A clear acrylic stand is included so the constitution can be displayed upright on a shelf like a museum exhibit.

Certificate of authenticity

Each copy comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing an individual number from 1 to 250.

A preserved imperfection

Every quirk of the original is preserved on purpose. On the 1879 title page the word "Търново" is slightly curved due to the limits of the period's printing process. We have reproduced that "flaw" 1:1 in our edition, because details like this are what speak to the authenticity and history of the document.

Frequently asked questions

Is delivery included in the price?

Yes. Delivery within Bulgaria is included in the price. For deliveries within the European Union we confirm the terms on a case-by-case basis.

Can I request a specific copy number?

You can note a preferred number in the comments field when you order. We will check availability and confirm whether it is free before finalising the order.

Do you issue a company invoice?

Yes. When ordering, tick "I need a company invoice" and fill in the company name, UIC (EIK) and, optionally, a VAT ID. The edition makes a fitting corporate gift.

Does every copy really have gilded, golden lettering?

Yes. The coat of arms and the lettering are brass, copper-plated and gilded, with 0.30–0.35 g of pure gold in each copy, which is why we describe it as the constitution with golden letters.

What is the difference between a phototype edition and a facsimile?

A phototype edition reproduces the content of the original photographically, an exact 1:1 copy of the pages. A facsimile goes further and also reproduces the physical object: its binding, materials, size and colour, so it stands like the original. Our edition is both, an exact reproduction of the original 1879 Tarnovo Constitution.
